A: Because dummy, it's the industry standard! If you have a record label, make them do it, and if you're going to put out an album, you better set aside copies to send for free to magazines and online publications to get reviewed. We don't get anything out of reviewing your music except the pleasure to hear your music. Currently it costs $1.81 to ,mail a cd (about 4oz). Enveloped can be bought at Walmart, Target, or anywhere other than the expensive post office, for .25-.50 cents. Bubble mailers are good, but you can also send cds in cheap brown envelopes which i've seen for .15 cents. Your cd shouldn't cost you more than $1.50 or you are getting ripped off o have 1,000 page booklets. Add in a copy of your one-sheet .08 cents and the total costs about $3.55 to send just a cd. It may seem like alot of money, so don't send your cd to just anyone. Do your research. Email magazines, give them your myspace link and ask if they would like to review your music. Look at other music that has been reviewed and see if your music is similar. Send to big magazines and small ones, online, and in-print zines selling in stores. Send them to record labels you like and artists you like. Don't send to lists you find, but make your own and budget how many you can afford to send out. Getting a good review may not get you 100 more sales, but it could get you 10. It will also give you marketing points when proving to people that you are good, not to mention getting you noticed by people who work in the music industry. Don't forget that the music industry includes magazines, college radio and music snobs who can help you spread your message.
